I shot a suite of photography for Nuclear Restoration Services (NRS) at Chapelcross and Hunterston A, working to help visually tell the story of what they do. NRS is responsible for safely decommissioning first-generation nuclear power and research sites across the UK, restoring the sites for future generations.

This shoot was a real eye-opener. Even though I’ve been inside factories, clean rooms and behind-the-scenes of lots of different industries, I’d never been inside a nuclear reactor before. Safety was absolutely paramount. There were many protocols, rules and clearances to follow just to be allowed in those spaces.

At Chapelcross and Hunterston A the teams were really welcoming, knowledgeable and generous with their time and explanation. They helped me understand how to represent their work visually, the delicate controlled processes and the people moving carefully through strict systems. The resulting suite of photography is a mix of candids and environmental portraits telling the story of dedicated teams doing the hard work of decommissioning the sites day after day.

Thank you to everyone who guided me through the day with patience, professionalism and care to keep me safe and help me understand how it all works.
